Headaches and migraines are common conditions that are often able to be resolved with osteopathic treatment. Headaches and migraines can affect some people occasionally, frequently, or chronically and can last minutes, hours, days, weeks, and sometimes months. Both headaches and migraines can cause mild discomfort to debilitating pain that can be described as a dull ache, throbbing, pulsating, pressure, tension, and sharp pain. Associated symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, visual disturbances, light and sound sensitivity, dizziness, light-headedness, and fogginess. Headaches and migraines can become incredibly wearing when experiencing them constantly.
Headaches are often the result of structural imbalances in the head and neck in which case osteopathic treatment can often provide fast and effective relief. Other causes may include jaw (TMJ) misalignment, muscle tension, stress, whiplash or other injuries, concussion, eyestrain, sinusitis, poor posture, and dehydration.
Migraines can be a little more complex with less known about the true cause of migraines, however, migraines can be a result of referred visceral (organs) pain and vice versa.
